Are Undocumented Immigrants Eligible For Health Insurance?

The most generous long term health insurance in Bangkok is offered to both locals and foreigners. Immigrants are screened for any diseases to allow them to buy into the national health insurance. However, this is not the case for other countries that have universal, government-run health coverage. Most immigrants are given emergency care but they have to pay for other costs.

Health policy experts say that it would be an outlier if the United States starts to provide comprehensive health coverage to undocumented immigrants. In countries like Norway, there are tough restrictions on healthcare for undocumented immigrants.

According to Pew Research Centre, there were 10.5 million undocumented immigrants in the US in 2017 and about 5.5 to 6 million do not have coverage. Economists say that the expense of providing them with coverage would eventually pay off because they do not have to wait until they are too sick before seeking treatment.

Results of studies have revealed that most undocumented immigrants are young and healthy for potentially cheaper coverage than overall American population. These undocumented immigrants were able to survive the extremely difficult journey to the United States. Meanwhile, other researchers suggest that most undocumented immigrants are disproportionately poor and are suffering from diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Last week, Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind. said that undocumented immigrants are contributing to society because they are paying property and sales taxes. While most of them are being paid out of the books, some employers withhold taxes making them eligible for health care programs.

Undocumented immigrants tend to underuse healthcare because of their fear of being deported. Majority of their children qualify for Medicaid and CHIP coverage because they were born in the US. However, parents are afraid to enrol their children in spite of their eligibility because they do not want to jeopardize the family.

There is no substitute to the safety net that is provided by health insurance in Bangkok for Thais, foreigners and expats. A range of options from limited to comprehensive coverage is offered so that customers can choose the most appropriate plan for their needs. Premiums are competitive and cover actual medical expenses for both inpatient and outpatient.
