Line And Foodpanda Dominating The Online Food Platform In Bangkok

Everyone knows about that Bangkok love food and it is one of the major reasons why tourists are wishing to visit the city. This love of food is apparent with the rise in popularity of meal-delivery platforms. According to Foodpanda, a startup from Delivery Hero AG, it is expected that the competition will become tougher this year thus further cementing the strength of the industry. It is convenient as tourists staying at a hotel near Central Embassy do not need to go out and buy food when they are already too tired from walking around the city the entire day.

The top players currently competing are Uber Eats which is launched by Uber Technologies Inc, Line Man from Line Corp. and Foodpanda. In order to encourage customers to order from them, they are offering promotions like discounts on orders and free delivery. These three companies are vying to dominate the market because unlike Singapore and Hong Kong, it is still underdeveloped.

According to Alexander Felde, the chief executive of Foodpanda in Thailand, Bangkok has a great potential because there are many great restaurants in the city along with thousands of street stalls.

Felde added that the food culture in the country is quite strong that locals and tourists alike have a connection with what they eat. With this, the company expects to receive twice the delivery they made in 2017 which will reach 16,000 orders every day. He clarified that the company is just starting and they are a new player in terms of the delivery business in the nation.

In terms of revenue, Foodpanda tops the list but they are preparing as more competition are expected to enter the city this year such as Deliveroo from Roofoods Ltd and Go-Jek from Indonesia.

According to the president of Thailand Tech Startup Association, Vachara Aemavat, they have seen the same setup from the ride-sharing platforms that entered Thailand but the bottom line is that the small players will have no choice but to exit.

As the online food ordering industry becomes crowded, consumers have more options. Tourists can easily stay at their hotel near Central Embassy and does not have to worry about going out because of the existence of such services in busy Bangkok.
