Maldives Going Off Tight Budget Plan

In spite of the recent political issues that have struck the country, Maldives is still attracting a lot of investment in hospitality. New hotels, and Maldives water villas are opening up, with Mövenpick being one of the most recent addition to the brands on the islands.

Travel experiences in the archipelagic country focuses on simple beach life and water sports, with a particular emphasis on scuba diving, as well as marine tourism. There’s also minimal interaction with the locals, which means that the general appeal is to quality time with loved ones and privacy.

Maldives saw a lot of openings in 2018, to be followed in early 2019 by the opening of a Waldorf Astoria and its luxury pool Maldives water villas accommodations.

One of the last openings before 2019 was Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts Kuredhivaru Maldives, which opened at the Noonu Atoll on November 5. Upon opening, the property featured 105 villas, located a mere 15 minutes from the new Maafaru Island airport via speedboat. It’ll also be accessible via the Noonu Atoll.

Other key openings in 2018 were the Italian-owned Baglioni Resort at March, which was named by CNN Travel as one of the hot new hotels in the archipelago. The Lux North Malé Atoll also opened earlier in 2018, which stood out from the rest of the properties with its penthouse residence offerings, in contrast to the Maldives water villas that’s the usual fare.

Oblue Select at Sangeli opened in July of 2018, with 137 villas, with most of its villas close to the coastline, with some over water.

In October, the Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa opened with 120 villas, also a mix of over-water and beach accommodations.

One of the most notable future openings is the pending opening of the Waldorf Astoria Maldives in March 2019, a property spread out across three islands in the South Male Atoll. This new property will be located 23km from the Velana International Airport, about 30-minutes of sea travel from the capital of Male. According to the property’s pre-opening press release, the property will have 10 dining outlets.

Recently, Luxury Travel Guide also named the Dusit Thani Maldives as the “Luxury Hotel & Restaurant of the Year – Maldives”.
